Built in 1915, the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls complex was modernized in 1956 and again in 1998 to emphasize glass and wood detailing that blends with the natural surroundings. In 2012, while we were designing the Lodge’s prototype guest rooms, we were asked to refresh the registration lobby – a task we accomplished largely with paint, making dramatic changes to the color pallet and lighting, reviving a space that had become tired and dated.
Glossy, ivory painted walls were repainted in flat finish terra cotta and tan, and the white, vaulted ceilings became a dark, forest brown – the same brown used to paint out the Hunter green window and door trim. We replaced Hunter green Formica countertops with engineered quartz surfaces and the pattern of the new carpet – though a different color, consistent with the pattern we’d specified for the Food Court and Mountain Room restaurant – brought a refreshing continuity across the entire property. Rustic new hickory seating in two contrasting fabrics made the lobby complete.
